Japan: Supercomputer reduces disaster risk

Source(s): Nikkei Asian Review, Nikkei Inc

Since Japan's massive earthquake and tsunami, reducing disaster risk has become a major focus for companies, reports Nikkei Asian Review. Tohoku University and Fujitsu Laboratories have jointly developed a real-time flood analysis system using Fujitsu's supercomputer, K. Its simulation model quickly calculates the estimated arrival time of tsunamis and the probability and extent of building damage.

According to the report, the new system can figure out how far inland will be affected within 10 minutes of an earthquake. Municipalities could potentially use it to provide disaster information to residents. However, regulatory hurdles stand in the way, reports Nikkei, as only the Meteorological Agency has the authority to release tsunami-related information.
