Sri Lanka has launched a $3.4m project aimed to increase coastal resilience to damage caused by floods, erosion, tsunamis and storm surge, reports Floodlist. The project seeks to protect existing mangrove forests and restore 3,885 hectares (9,600 acres) of previously destroyed mangroves.
Seacology executive director Duane Silverstein said, "After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, it became evident – particularly in Sri Lanka which was severely impacted – that those villages that had intact mangroves suffered significantly less damage than those that did not".
