Regional assessment centre to be set up in Myanmar

According to the Xinhua News Agency, a local news agency in Myanmar has reported that the Myanmar Meteorology and Hydrology Department will be setting up a regional assessment centre for natural hazards in Yangon.

The report announced that Myanmar had recently joined a project initiated by the Thai-based Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and in cooperation with several agencies. Some of the projects highlighted include capacity building of Myanmar's MHD, the promotion of a national multi-hazard early warning system, and rehabilitation work on cyclone-affected areas related to agriculture, health, social and education sectors together with the elaboration of a disaster preparedness plan and joint work procedure.
