Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction for strengthening resilience of IDPs and host communities in Northern Jonglei

An Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction Intervention to Enhance the Preparedness and Resilience of vulnerable Returnees, IDPs and Vulnerable Host Communities in Northern Jonglei State, South Sudan is the projects goal.

The target group are 15,000 direct (affected by the floods in 2011) and 30,000 indirect beneficiaries (host communities whose meager resources are being shared with the IDPs and survivors of disasters especially, floods and the war).

To build preparedness and capacity for flood affected population several activities are planned. These include conducting Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) exercises to strengthen resilience against natural disasters, conducting Vulnerability Capacity Assessments, establishing and train DRR committees, providing DRR Kits to 6 IDP preparedness committees, establishing Early Warning Systems, providing Search & Rescue Trainings and First Aid Trainings for DRR committee members and conducting community based simulations in each of the 6 payams.

Further activities target to reduce the risk of water-borne diseases through WASH interventions while raising hygiene awareness and education by conducting trainings for hygiene promoters and community hygiene promotion campaigns and by distribution of small water filters (lifestraws) for household use.
