ARISE UAE supports the implementation of the Sendai Framework by bringing together and changing the behaviors of stakeholders from the public and private sector through the conduct of specific activities, programs and projects, consistent with ARISE policies, goals and objectives.

    Description

The mission of ARISE UAE is in accord with the mission of the global UNDRR ARISE that is “to create risk-resilient societies by energizing the private sector in collaboration with the public sector and other stakeholders to achieve the outcome and goal of the Sendai Framework in a transparent and inclusive way that delivers local and measurable impact.” The aim of this commitment is to establish the first National ARISE network in the Arab region along with its workplan.

The ARISE UAE reflects on the United Arab Emirates commitment towards disaster risk reduction and its important role in developing resilient cities and communities. This network showcases the UAE leadership in convening a strong platform for the private sector to support and implement the Sendai Framework Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030, aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Paris Climate Agreement, New Urban Agenda and Agenda for Humanity. With the private sector acting as the catalyst and a critical partner, ARISE UAE members shall focus on risk-informed business investment in order to achieve coherent approaches to the reduction of disaster and climate risks for sustainable development and long-term economic growth. Furthermore, ARISE UAE hopes to set a roadmap for the private sector in other Arab countries.

As a result, a series of meetings, activities and projects will be conducted to combine the intellectual capital assets of the private sector with the public sector, academia, and other stakeholders' knowledge, outreach, and resources, including operational, communication, policy, investment, risk management and other technical solutions. ARISE UAE members are committed to engage in capacity development, education, and participation in the development of required policies, standards, tools and regulations through the private sector expertise and innovation to reduce disaster risks at the national and local level.

Did the Sendai Framework change or contribute to changes in your activities/organization? If so, how?

The Sendai Framework provides a global roadmap for reducing disaster losses by 2030. It states that stakeholders, including the private sector have a pivotal role to integrate disaster risk management into business models and practices through disaster-risk-informed investments, awareness-raising, training, technological development, and, under the guidance of the public sector, helping the development of normative frameworks and technical standards. ARISE, the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, is a network of private sector entities led by UNDRR, and ARISE UAE is the first National Network in the Arab Region. In joining ARISE, private sector companies voluntarily commit to support and implement the Sendai Framework.

What led you to make this commitment/initiative?

What was your position before making this Voluntary Commitment / prior to the Sendai Framework?

The globe is facing challenging times with rapid changes due to disasters. The need to create risk-resilient societies is inevitable. Thus, the United Arab Emirates is motivated to lead the private sector engagement for disaster risk reduction. As a result, we announced the first ARISE initiative in the Arab region to achieve the outcomes and goals of the Sendai Framework in a transparent and inclusive way that delivers measurable impact. ARISE UAE will work closely with Dubai Police who is leading on Dubai Resilient and other local and federal governments to create risk-resilient societies by energizing the private sector in collaboration with the public sector and other stakeholders.
