Towards the future we want: end hunger and make the transition to sustainable agricultural and food systems

Source(s):  Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - Headquarters (FAO)

This document presents FAO’s contribution to identifying the challenges faced with food security and agriculture, the consensus needed and actions to be taken in order to reach the sustainable 'future we want.' It conveys FAO's three main messages for the Rio+20 summit and calls for national governments and other stakeholders to reduce risk and increase the resilience of the most vulnerable, among 4 other priority areas for policy action. It asserts that it is essential to mainstream risk reduction and adaptation into national development policies and public investment, given the high costs of disasters for food security, and highlights the importance of technologies to increase resilience, such as drought- and heat-resistant crop varieties, in the context of climate change adaptation and risk management.
