Super typhoon could ‘drown’ 30% of Tokyo’s central districts

Much of central Tokyo could left flooded in up to 10 meters of water if a super typhoon pounded the capital and triggered storm surges, authorities said.

The Tokyo metropolitan government offered a worst-case scenario March 30 that found 17 of the 23 wards would be swamped if a super typhoon raged in areas around Tokyo Bay.

The daytime population of the districts most likely to be affected is around 3.95 million. The figure drops to 3.25 million at nighttime.

Officials said plans are in the cards for local authorities to strengthen evacuation measures.

The metropolitan government released a map of the likely flood zone resulting from typhoon-generated storm surges for the first time.
