Malaysia: 32 flood mitigation projects underway

Source(s): New Straits Times, the

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup announced that the thirty-two flood mitigation projects were undertaken by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) at a cost of RM880 million. Expected to be completed by the end of the year, the projects involve the construction of flood control embankments, the completion of six flood hazard maps, as well as a three-day conference, with the theme of 'Transboundary Water Related Disasters: Lessons to be Learned.'

"Although many diverse actors are engaged in the field of water, the attention given to water-related disaster risk reduction is still weak, often as a result of lack of awareness, fragmented institutional systems without effective coordination and cooperation mechanisms, and lack of funding," said Kurup.
