Statement on the disaster in Nepal and China by Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR
I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life caused by the devastating flash flood and mudslides that struck parts of Nepal and China. I offer my sincere condolences to the people and Governments of Nepal and China, and to all those affected by this disaster.
At this difficult time, I ask the international community to stand in solidarity with the affected countries and communities, supporting their immediate response efforts and longer-term recovery.
This disaster is a stark reminder of the transboundary nature of many disaster risks, the fragility of mountain ecosystems, and the challenges of early warning and early action for cascading hazards in mountainous regions. We must continue to work together to address these challenges.
