Disaster risk reduction efforts will be more effective with improved economic and social well-being, a senior United Nations official said last week following a four-day visit, as reported by the Myanmar Times. "Reducing disaster [risk] also [requires] improvements to the social and economic wellbeing of the people. Now, to do that takes a longer time [and] it will require many different things. But the important thing now is that early warning systems, preparedness, education and training have already been started so people know how to protect themselves," Ms Margareta Wahlström, the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, told The Myanmar Times.
