Italy mourns flood dead amid anger over 'avoidable' tragedy

Following the devastation of Cyclone Cleopatra and the subsequent flood which killed over 16 people in Sardinia, Italy, environmental organizations are blaming the increased urbanization, soil degradation and slack building codes for the tragedy, reports Xinhua.

"Education on flood warnings and safety behaviors is also fundamental. Many people died as they underestimated the strength of floods or made wrong choices when they faced one.

New urban planning must abide by strict regulations and respect the environment so as to avoid the carelessness that continues to claim lives, destroy natural landscapes and threaten the future of Italy," said engineer Alessandro Vittorini Orgeas...
