Gambia: Community-based disaster risk reduction, adaptation confab on climate change
Speaking at a training of trainers on capacity re-enforcement and institutional analysis for disaster risk reduction and management in agriculture FAO representative Mrs. Mariatou Njie Faal told the Point that the Sahel region has witnessed recurrent cycles of drought and floods and this repeated cyclical phenomenon has significantly eroded the resilience of communities to shocks associated with drought or flood and their inability to recover and restore their livelihoods before the next shock.
“It is right for this reason that this particular training focuses on planning for community-based disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change,” she noted.
Mr. Abdoulie Bojang, the chairman of the ceremony added that climate change is a threat to food security; planning to combat, prevent and mitigate climate change is a step in the right direction.
