New satellite-based research has identified signs of Ahmedabad land subsidence across parts of the city’s western and southern urban corridors, raising concerns over groundwater management, urban planning and the long-term resilience of rapidly expanding neighbourhoods.

[...]

The analysis, conducted using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology and satellite observations collected between 2016 and 2025, detected measurable downward ground movement in several localities.

[...]

Even gradual ground movement can affect roads, drainage systems, underground utilities and building foundations over time, especially if development is not supported by continuous geotechnical monitoring and sustainable groundwater management.

[...]

The researchers emphasised that the current findings represent an interim assessment based on selected satellite processing periods and that analysis of the complete dataset is still underway.
