Japan: Measures need to be reexamined to prepare for major disasters

Source(s): Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri Shimbun writes in an opinion piece that Japan should reexamine its preparedness against natural disasters as their occurrence is unpredictable. Ahead of Disaster Prevention Day on Tuesday, antidisaster drills are to be held at various parts of the country.

According to the article, presuming a huge quake occurred under the metropolitan area, the number of deaths are estimated at a maximum of 23,000, while approximately 120,000 are projected to be injured. There are fears that medical institutions in the Tokyo metropolitan area would be overwhelmed if they had to take in all of the injured people.
