Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: Putting local climate know-how on the map
“In the past, most climate change initiatives have been top-down, coming from the government level,” said Barriteau, executive director of Sustainable Grenadines (Sus Gren), a trans-boundary non-governmental organisation committed to the conservation of the coastal and marine environment and sustainable livelihoods for the people between Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, reports IPS.
“[But] our communities, especially the ones on the coast, have been witnessing and adapting to the effects of climate changes over time,” he says.
SusGren, in collaboration with the Netherlands-based Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), have involved local communities and regional and international organisations on Union Island, one of the Grenadine Islands to build three-dimensional maps that will strengthen local awareness of climate change.
