Pakistan, UN seek to cut risk of glacial lake floods

The Bindu Gol valley in Northern Pakistan is one of the first areas where the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change has started a glacial lake flood risk reduction project. This $7.6 million project is one of the first initiatives to be funded by the UN-backed Adaptation Fund, which finances programmes that help developing countries adapt to the negative effects of climate change, reports Alertnet.

The Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) project will run until 2015 and it is aiming to raise awareness of the of public institutions and vulnerable communities on the issue, as well as building their capacity to prevent disasters. The project will involve locals to draw up disaster management plans and to install early warning systems.
