Averting flood disasters in Nigeria

In his opinion for the Nigerian Tribune, Abubakar Jimoh presents the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)'s strengthened approaches on disaster risk reduction and particularly the mitigating measures against flood disasters such as warning alerts and the organisation of conferences and workshops aimed at educating individuals on the subject.

Jimoh calls for Nigeria to review and strengthen its Land Use and Control Act in order to restrict building on flood-prone environment. For successful flood fighting, he advocates for the construction of sophisticated drainage system, the protection of swamps, the regulation of floodplain development and urbanisation, and the prevention of soil erosion.
