“We’ve experienced floodwaters rising even 20 times in a single day. Still, the community continues to adapt,” Mr Marakiwai said.

Mr Marakiwai added that while some families are starting to build homes on higher ground, access to clean and safe drinking water would remain a grave concern.

“The younger generation would rather face occasional floods here than deal with water shortages uphill,” said Mr Marakiwai.

Plans are now underway to dredge the river and improve drainage.

He added that the village’s community hall, which has been used as an evacuation centre, is currently being upgraded to better withstand flooding.
