The Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are to develop educational radio programmes focusing on disaster risk preparedness, reduction and management, for rural communities, reports the Namibia Economist.

The programmes are translated from English into local languages with the aim of developing disaster resilient communities and to ensure that the messages reach the targeted communities in the northern parts of the country. Topics covered in the programme include “Importance of Education in Emergencies”, “Protection in Emergencies” and “Disaster Management and Community Involvement” amongst others.

“Disasters, whether resulting from natural or man-made hazards, can destroy hard-earned development and educational achievements as it interrupts the development plans of any given country, consequently, disaster risk reduction initiatives can make or break the preparedness of any community to natural disasters,” said Director of NAMCOL, Heroldt Murangi.
