Jakarta sinking as water supplies dry up

Source(s): Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Jakarta sinks 10 centimeters per year due to disappearing ground water. The solution that the government of Jakarta has come up with is to build a huge dam around Jakarta Bay to fight increased sea levels, tidal waves and land subsidence, reports ABC News. "If the land sinking isn't resolved, then there will be widespread tidal waves that would cause more extensive flooding in Jakarta," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, an expert hydrologist with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
