Spice it up!

Sing for Preparedness was a National Song Competition by the Disaster Management Project of the Grenada Red Cross Society. It aimed at raising awareness on issues surrounding climate change and disasters through the mobilisation of cultural creativity, while promoting volunteerism in disaster management. It also represented an opportunity to promote local talents on the national and the regional scene.

The Disaster Management team of Grenada travelled about one hundred and fifty (150) miles north east to Barbados on the 28th July, 2012 for the Bajan version of Spice It Up - Sing for preparedness. Project Coordinator, Facilitators, and Communications Officer were joined by winner of Grenada’s Spice It Up - Sing for preparedness Rio “Snakey” St. Paul, and third runner up Eclipse Swipe Avonni (E. S. A.). The young male stars made their first appearance on a regional stage, the same stage shared by soca queen Alison Hinds that night.Music video for Snakey, winner of the Sing For Preparedness competition organized in Grenada by the Red Cross and UNDP, and aimed at promoting volunteerism in disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation.

The team was very impressed with the competitors’ level of knowledge on disasters and climate change and the creativity in how these were shared through song. Drama, spoken word, and dance were also part of presentations. After stiff competition, Danielle Gibson emerged the winner of the Barbados’ leg of Spice It Up - Sing for preparedness, receiving a host of prizes of which included a music video and a professional recording of her song.

The top 5 winners of Barbados and Grenada are currently in studios recording their songs for the official Spice It Up - Sing for preparedness CD!
