India: Students to learn about disaster mgmt on video

A video, implemented by the department of applied geology and supported by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, demonstrates the vulnerability of India's coastline to climatic disasters and is being used as a learning tool for students in Chennai.

"We would like to talk to students about disaster management and explain the concepts to them after they watch the video. We are also trying to get funds to develop simple models to demonstrate phenomena like soil liquefaction in the event of an earthquake and the ability of mangroves to act as a protective shield from high waves," said Dr R R Krishnamurthy, associate professor, department of applied geology.
