How cities build resilience

Wellington, New Zealand Mayor Wade-Brown highlights the need for disaster management and building of social capital by appreciating ethnic diversity, saying 'resilience is also about proper disaster management; social capital cannot be seen as a cheap way out of planning and building for disasters'.

Wellington is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, and public buildings have been strengthened, together with widespread education on what to do when a tsunami' hits, reports Today Online.

The report also highlights the challenges faced by the mayor of Tacoloban, Philippines following Typhoon Yolanda - known internationally as Haiyan, and the supporting efforts of the Rockefeller Foundation and its 100 Resilient Cities Centennial Challenge.
