Earthquake expert sees slow gains in Haiti

Professor Eric Calais, science adviser for the disaster risk reduction programme of the United Nations Development Programme in Port-au-Prince, has been working since August 2010 with government officials and others to create a seismic risk reduction plan for the country. This plan takes earthquakes into consideration when building offers outreach information about earthquakes, training Haitian seismologists and mapping the seismic hazards in the country.

"I am here to set them on the right path, and the measure of success will be available in 5 or 10 years when the seismic network is put into place...and earthquake safety is truly taken into account" said Calais.
