Asia Pacific: 'Most vulnerable to catastrophe' according to report

The Asia-Pacific was the most vulnerable region to natural disasters in 2011, writes the Wall Street Journal based on the recently released United Nations Economic and Social Survey of the Asia Pacific report.

Authors warn: “Countries across the region need to invest more in disaster risk reduction as an essential component of their long-term development strategies. This will involve protecting social and economic assets from floods and other disasters, particularly in those areas where rapid economic growth has heightened the risks.” The document also emphasized the importance of implementing early-warning systems; maintaining and restoring ecosystems that buffer the impact of natural hazards; and providing alternatives for those living in high-risk areas.
