An African flood forecasting system could help mitigate suffering from catastrophic floods, writes Linda Nordling for SciDevNet.

Recalling the recent heavy rains that caused rivers in Malawi and Mozambique to burst their banks, causing death, damage and displacement, and highlighting learning from the An African Flood Forecasting System (AFFS), Nordling calls for political will to implement flood early warning systems with urgency, and to develop and resource national disaster plans in Africa.
