ARISE Japan is a national network of ARISE. ARISE Japan organizes "ARISE Japan Public Symposium" as its annual flagship public symposium to discuss a focused theme to contribute to the implementation of the Sendai Framework.

ARISE is the UNDRR’s Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, a network of private sector organizations committed to building a more disaster resilient society through implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030. ARISE Japan is a national network of ARISE.
Every year, ARISE Japan organizes and hosts an annual public symposium "ARISE Japan Public Symposium" to discuss private sector engagement with the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Here, members share their experiences and reflect on their challenges and successes. The network and these events emphasize the vital importance of partnerships and collaboration, both across the private sector and among the diverse stakeholders called upon by the Sendai Framework to further disaster risk reduction.
This public is organized in March every year, which is the memorial month of Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11.
Did the Sendai Framework change or contribute to changes in your activities/organization? If so, how?
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction specifically emphasizes the important role diverse stakeholders have to play in building resilient societies. This includes the private sector, academia, and civil society. Members of ARISE Japan voluntary commit to support and implement the Sendai Framework when they join the network. The network functions to provide opportunities and support for private sector organizations to engage with the Sendai Framework and work towards a more disaster resilient society through this guidance. Therefore, the Sendai Framework has been influential in the founding and direction of ARISE Japan and its events.
What led you to make this commitment/initiative?
What was your position before making this Voluntary Commitment / prior to the Sendai Framework?
The ARISE Japan network is a partnership under Global ARISE and the UNDRR Partnership Strategy. This voluntary commitment has been submitted to ensure that all the network’s actions are transparent, shared, and monitored. It also ensures that ARISE Japan’s activities are counted towards the implementation of the Sendai Framework.

Deliverables
Deliverables are the end-products of the initiative/commitment, which can include issuance of publications or knowledge products, outcomes of workshops, training programs, videos, links, photographs, etc.
Held in a hybrid format between a Tokyo venue and online, the ARISE Japan Public Symposium 2023 was titled ‘Investment into disaster resilience: The many forms of private sector DRR engagement.’ The focus of the symposium was to discuss examples of good practice in disaster resilient investment in both internal business strategies and external innovation initiatives.
The title of the ARISE Japan Public Symposium 2024 was ‘Successes and challenges in DRR innovation – including early findings from the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.’ The network came together to discuss preliminary lessons to be learned from the M7.6 Noto Peninsula Earthquake of January 2024, with a specific focus on challenges and opportunities for innovation.
In 2025, the title of the ARISE Japan Public Symposium was ‘Breakthroughs via collaboration: How various forms of DRR partnerships address resilience challenges.’ The theme focused on renewed efforts for collaboration within, across, and outside of the private sector.
ARISE Japan Public Symposium 2026 is scaled up into a Joint Symposium by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Kobe Office and ARISE Japan, featuring a two-part programme: a high level session on “Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction by Advancing Investment in Resilience and Translating Science into Practical Action” featuring leaders from public, private, and academic sectors and SRSG Kamal Kishore; and a case studies session presenting leading examples of societal DRR implementation by Japanese private sector companies. This Joint Symposium serves as a steppingstone toward the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR), which is expected to take place in Japan in the autumn of 2027.
