The ARISE Japan and ARISE Philippines, two active ARISE national networks, have come together to share their knowledge, experiences, and opportunities to improve disaster resilience in the private sector.

    Description

ARISE is the UNDRR’s Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, a network of private sector organizations committed to building a more disaster resilient society through implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030. ARISE has four key priority areas for its network; small and medium enterprises, resilient infrastructure, insurance, and investors and investment. Across these four areas, ARISE is committed to identifying and developing opportunities for disaster risk reduction in the private sector. ARISE has national level networks and has identified that there also exist opportunities for lesson learning across national borders. That is why ARISE Japan and ARISE Philippines have organized four knowledge sharing sessions across its four priority areas. These online sessions aim to facilitate close and direct conversation with ARISE colleagues across these national networks, encouraging companies and individuals to learn from one another’s successes and failures.

Did the Sendai Framework change or contribute to changes in your activities/organization? If so, how?

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction emphasizes the role of the private sector and other stakeholders in building disaster-resilient societies. Members of the ARISE network recognize the importance of their role and voluntarily commit to implementing the Sendai Framework upon joining the network. ARISE is an opportunity for these individuals and companies to come together to share their experiences, challenges, good practices and opportunities with one another to build towards this common goal. Therefore, the Sendai Framework has been influential in the founding and direction of ARISE Japan and ARISE Philippines and their events.

What led you to make this commitment/initiative?

What was your position before making this Voluntary Commitment / prior to the Sendai Framework?

The ARISE network is a partnership under the UNDRR Partnership Strategy. This voluntary commitment has been submitted to ensure that the work of the ARISE network is transparent, shared, monitored, and counted towards the implementation of the Sendai Framework. Also this modality of cross-ARISE national network collaborations can serve as a good practice for ARISE members and national networks.

ARISE Japan-Philippines Knowledge Sharing Session 1: Small & Medium Enterprises
    Intended date of delivery
    1 December 2021

ARISE Japan and ARISE Philippines hosted the first of four knowledge sharing sessions in December 2021. With a focus on building the resilience of small and medium enterprises, the session brought together network members from both Japan and the Philippines to share their own initiatives, good practices, and replicable tips for success. Acknowledging the substantial role of SMEs in the private sector means recognizing the importance of building their resilience to disasters by identifying unaddressed gaps, sharing knowledge, and building their capacity through collaboration and innovation.

ARISE Japan-Philippines Knowledge Sharing Session 2: Resilient Infrastructure
    Intended date of delivery
    1 February 2022

The second ARISE Japan-Philippines Knowledge Sharing Session brought together approximately 30 participants to discuss the role of the private sector in improving infrastructural resilience. A significant part of the discussion focused on the Building Resilience Index (BRI), which aims to incentivize investment in the resilience of the built environment and identify risks and mitigation measures for both new and existing infrastructure. Through this tool, the vital role of the private sector in pushing for more resilient infrastructure may be acknowledged and emphasized.

ARISE Japan-Philippines Knowledge Sharing Session 3: Insurance
    Intended date of delivery
    1 July 2022

In July 2022, the third of the ARISE Japan-Philippines Knowledge Sharing Sessions was held under the theme of ‘Insurance.’ Attending members discussed the vital importance of insurance for moving away from a reactive approach to disaster financing and towards a more sustainable approach. The private sector has the ability to push this proactive mindset to the forefront through their own actions and by communicating with governments.

    Intended date of delivery
    1 November 2022

The fourth and final Knowledge Sharing Session organized between ARISE Japan and ARISE Philippines was held in November 2022 on the theme of ‘Investors and Insurance.’ Here, presenters and participants discussed the role of return on investment metrics, interoperable disaster data, and how the private sector might continue to engage successfully with investors to allow businesses to build capacity and resilience.
