Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship under supervision of Professor Debby Guha-Sapir, Director of the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (www.cred.be), and in collaboration with the CRED team.

The project will include the conceptual design and implementation of a case study in “health preparedness and heat wave response plans among selected European countries” that will provide the primary materials for the thesis. The candidate will build on the framing and methodological approach of resilience developed by ongoing FP7 projects (e.g. emBRACE). This will be further developed for application in research on risk assessment and multi-sectorial partnerships.

The position is funded by the European Commission under the Environment Theme of the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, and is available for a maximum period of 4 years, starting in spring 2013.

The successful candidate will have a strong academic interest in one or more of the following areas: disaster risk management and policies, medicine and public health. The successful candidate should also have a strong interest in, and commitment to, academic research.

Fluency in written and spoken English is essential and fluency in French will be a strong asset. Fluency in other European languages is desirable. Knowledge of or previous work experience with international institutions would be highly appreciated. The candidate must follow the programme of the Louvain School of Public Health and will, if successful, receive a doctoral degree from the Université catholique de Louvain’s School of Medicine.
