Preparedness for disasters and adaptation to climate change by coastal communities of Maharashtra and Goa, India
Saritsa Foundation in association with India Meteorological Department, Govt of India, Govt. of Maharashtra and Govt of Goa are organizing workshops for Monsoon awareness and preparedness for disasters as a mobile campaign with team of experts for coastal communities.
The disasters which commonly affect coastal people are floods, sea-level rise, tsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes and climate change. The campaign aims to raise awareness and impart education on and to train fishermen, rural youth, women, disabled and village local body representatives through practical training with an innovative use of local resources to respond to disasters and adapt to climate change.
The objectives are:
1. Raise awareness about the types of early warnings by the Meteorological Centers as well as integration of local warning systems.
2. Integrate local authorities of districts, Talukas Village Panchayats with community initiatives.
3. Mainstream local community to make the process of risk reduction people centered with their ownership.
