Right to a future: climate change negotiations must be accountable to children
This paper calls on the negotiators at the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun and beyond to hold themselves accountable for hearing the voices of children in order: (i) for the climate change negotiations to be accountable to children’s rights, needs and capacities; (ii) for any agreements on climate change adaptation financing to work for children, including measures to reduce the risk of disasters for children and to strengthen social protection for families having to adapt to a changing climate; (iii) for early warning on climate-related crises to be linked to decision making about financing and better linked to early action; (iv) for children to become active participants in measures to adapt to climate change; and (v) to prevent catastrophic climate change through a binding framework for action to reduce emissions and stop runaway climate change.
