The impact of climate change on the development prospects of the least developed countries and small island developing states
This document aims to highlight the vulnerabilities to climate change of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and suggests ways to create resilience among LDCs and SIDS. The document is divided into five sections: (i) the first section explains the effects of climate change on LDCs and SIDS; (ii) the second section relates the projections, environmental effects, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities of climate change on LDCs and SIDS; (iii) the third section considers adaptation strategies for LDCs and SIDS in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); (iv) the fourth section discusses the need for international cooperation in mitigation and adaptation; (v) and the fifth section concludes the document, highlighting the fact that, while LCDs and SIDS are the lowest producers of greenhouse gas emissions, they are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
