How the people of Bangladesh live with climate change and what communities can do
The Climate Asia project, conducted by BBC Media Action, surveyed over 3,500 households across Bangladesh, revealing that people are highly aware of climate change impacts such as rising temperatures, unpredictable weather, and water shortages. The report highlights regional variations in responses, with Barisal feeling unprepared for extreme weather, while Rajshahi struggles with water scarcity. Although many are taking adaptive actions, such as growing alternative crops and migrating for work, 45% of respondents still feel uninformed about how to respond effectively. The report stresses the need for targeted communication to build awareness, encourage self-belief, and share actionable strategies. Media and community discussions are crucial channels to inspire collective efforts and strengthen resilience at both individual and community levels.
Key recommendations include:
- Enhance communication: use trusted media channels, like TV and mobile, and community discussions to share information about climate risks and adaptive strategies.
- Foster community Networks: encourage collaboration through local leaders and influencers to strengthen collective action.
- Build self-belief: focus on fostering confidence that local actions can make a difference, countering the sense of helplessness and fatalism.
- Government accountability: promote better dialogue between communities and institutions, holding governments accountable to their commitments on climate adaptation.
