JNCC – UK Overseas Territories Report 6. Model development to assess the vulnerability of the Cayman Islands to storm surge and inland flooding and the role of natural capital in mitigating the impacts – Phase 2
The purpose of this report is to provide a summary of the outcomes from improvements to inland and coastal models which are used to quantify flood extents under extreme weather events and understand how flood protection is changed under different hypothetical scenarios for the state of natural capital on the Cayman Islands.
The results have been used to update the assessment of the value of the flood protection service provided by the Islands’ natural capital assets. This report identifies nature-based flood mitigation solutions, locations where they could be implemented, and a series of short-term environmental indicators to support disaster resilience. Finally, analytical tools have been developed to enable and assist staff in the Government of the Cayman Islands to undertake analysis and assessments in the future alongside capacity building activities. The updated results provide a significantly improved depiction of flood risk at small scales using new representation of local topographic features such as road embankments and individual real estate developments.
