Incorporating climate change resilience in India’s railway infrastructure: Challenges and potential
This research pinpoints the specific risks and vulnerabilities in the Indian railway system created due to climatic shifts induced by climate change, such as temperature fluctuations, changes in precipitation, and severe weather phenomena. In the study, the Indian railway network undergoes a meticulous analysis to evaluate its vulnerability - through methods including expert interviews, stakeholder consultations, and policy analysis - leading to the identification of key adaptations. Ultimately, this study delves into the crucial task of embedding climate change resilience within the sphere of railway infrastructure planning and design in India.
The research produces recommendations, aimed to shape the progression of a climate-resilient railway infrastructure in the light of India's distinct challenges. From a meta-analysis of existing literature, research papers, reports, and case studies, best practices and key principles for enhancing the resilience of railway systems were identified:
- Flexible and modular infrastructure design
- Climate-informed decision-making processes
- Proactive risk management
- Stakeholder engagement
For India, specific adaptation measures of infrastructure modifications, engineering solutions, operational changes, and nature-based solutions were identified to enhance the resilience of the railway infrastructure. By implementing the suggestions in this research, India's railway system can become more resilient and sustainable, contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts and serving as a model for other nations.
