Tiziana Rossetto, reader in earthquake engineering at University College London, United Kingdom, says that the Hyogo Framework cannot be considered a failure. 'The progression towards risk reduction must be participatory,' she adds. 'Raising awareness is important but, at the same time, we should help local communities implement practical measures and education schemes'...
'The point remains that UNISDR is at last seeking the voices of people with impairments to improve disaster preparedness and response processes. The research is important because the root of exclusion in humanitarian crises is the lack of voices of disabled people in disaster work'...
Policymakers require evidence that science can provide comprehensive solutions to specific problems and aid all levels of the decision-making process, said Virginia Murray, head of extreme events and health protection at Public Health England, United Kingdom, and an author of the recent report by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group of the UN's Office for Disaster Risk Reduction...
Plans to protect ecosystems and help people adapt to climate change ― also known as ecosystem-based adaptation ― must involve vulnerable groups, including women and communities greatly hit by global warming if they are to succeed, according to scientists quoted by SciDev...
'There is a need for local knowledge and practices to be integrated with those of the science community, to improve forecasts and increase acceptance, ownership and sustainability of early warning systems,' states Lucy Pearson of King's College, London...
One benefit of using both traditional and modern scientific knowledge is that it enables scientists to make the communication of forecasts more accessible to local communities — a problem not confined to developing countries. Communicating risk in a format that people will understand is a perennial challenge...
Advances in the early warning of natural hazards could bring great benefits to countries and communities. But early warning needs early action: if political will and coordination are lacking, the advantages could be lost...
Efforts to understand early warning and early action behaviour will become more successful by exploring how disaster risk reduction relates to poverty reduction — which in this context means not just improvements in meeting basic needs, but more broadly the absence of constraints to sustainable development...
Voluntary Commitments
The organization has no registered commitments.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
