Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government planted trees at Mertasari Beach, Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday as a symbolic move to reduce the risk of disasters.

The tree planting in Bali was part of a 10 million tree movement which was conducted simultaneously in 34 provinces.

Delegates of the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) along with the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) joined the planting of  mangrove tree seedlings in  Bali.

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) is the premier global forum for discussing the Sendai Framework for disaster risk reduction, also known as the Sendai Framework 2015-2030.

In 2022, the GPDRR is hosted by Indonesia in Bali on May 23-28, 2022.

"We do this (planting mangrove trees) in all parts of Indonesia that involves the entire community, including academics, school students, and community groups in the country," Deputy of Mental Revolution, Cultural Advancement, and Sports Achievement Didik Suhardi stated.

According to ANTARA's monitoring, the tree-planting event was launched by Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy virtually from Jakarta. At the same time, BNPB Head Lt. Gen. Suharyanto also personally participated in the planting of mangrove trees.

"Hopefully, with this activity, we (can) prove that gotong royong (mutual cooperation) in Indonesia is still very great," Suhardi noted.

He noted that planting the mangrove seedlings is one of the steps taken by Indonesia in preserving the nature independently.

Moreover, he remarked that tree planting movements are also conducted worldwide to reduce the impact of climate change. The mangrove tree planting activity also involves GPDRR delegates from all over the world.

"It is our awareness that this is not only the duty of tropical countries but our duty together, including the delegates that are present in Indonesia. Hence, hopefully, this would also be done in their respective countries," Suhardi stated.
