Australia: 3D simulation tools could reduce flood heights and save millions

An alternative green infrastructure solution for improving water quality – already saving south-east Queensland water utilities millions of dollars – was quietly launched in Brisbane on Tuesday night.

It allows conservation and research groups to decide the most effective technique to use to tackle future floods and allocate funds to the most effective projects to reduce flood heights.

Strategic planning manager Partha Susarla said siphoning river water through the natural processes of the Yandina wetlands was reducing 5.3 tonnes of nitrogen per year.

"We could immerse a landowner to the point of not just flying up the catchment, but standing on their front porch and looking up and down and showing them – well this is what it looks like now –and this is what it would look like if you did all these things," Professor Bunn [Australian Rivers Institute director] said.
