Building resilience through technology
DRR uses different types of technology to manage disaster risk; these include information and communication technologies, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and satellite data. Countries need to be able to inform and warn their citizens of potential natural disasters in a timely manner. This can only happen by combining different technologies that can observe a potential hazard, model the risk of it impacting a country, region, or smaller places, and disseminating information to as many people as possible.
Climate-related disaster risk is also managed using remote sensing data from satellites that observe the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans, from ground and upper-air stations, buoys, aircraft, and much more. These data can be fed into different models to regularly assess the risk of a potential climate-related disaster happening and provide our best chance at early preparedness and resilience building.
