Londoners have a lot to thank the Thames’s flood defences for, chief among these being the Thames Barrier, reports The Guardian. The increasing number of times the Barrier has had to be closed in the past year raises some concern as to how well London is prepared for another major flood.

Although it does not mark an impending disaster according to the Environment Agency, it does highlight the need for flood preparedness, something the 'Thames Estuary 2100' plan foresaw at the start of this century. It was a plan established to manage flood risk through to 2100.
