USA: California weighs $80 million early warning system that would give residents up to 60 seconds’ notice of an earthquake
“California is going to have an earthquake early warning system. The question is whether we have one before or after the next big quake,” told Senator Alex Padilla to the Daily News, pointing out the many ways that a warning system could save the state money in the long run, including mitigating damage to rail lines and public transportation. The senator was speaking on the occasion of a bill being introduced to the state's senate to facilitate building an early warning system that could alert residents 1 minute before the large quake. Seismologists predict that the chance of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hitting California is at 94 per cent over the next 30 years.
