India: Unplanned growth in hills, an invitation to disaster

A Gujarat-based consultancy has been tasked with preparing a disaster risk related atlas following the collapse of a 4-story building in Jalandhar, claiming 8 lives and trapping 100 workers inside, due to violations in building laws. Reminding of the seismic activity of the Himachal geographical area, the urban development department cautions against the magnitude of unplanned growth that increases risks of a disaster in waiting as more and more high rise buildings come up in the hills and town planners grapple with over 6,000 structures that have violated building laws in Himachal Pradesh. The state minister of urban development said the government was considering a policy to regularize some of the buildings where the deviations were within some permissible limits.
