More developing nations back the idea that global warming is an issue for the council, reports Nathanial Gronewold for ClimateWire. The July 20 discussion will be led by the German government and focus on 'security implications', particularly of Small Island Developing States who face increasing risk as sea levels rise.

According to the report, John Silk, foreign minister of the Marshall Islands, said his and other governments will press to have the Security Council appoint a special adviser on climate and security.

Food security issues may also be addressed.
