Anguilla hosts regional risk reduction initiative

The Valley, Anguilla - The National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC), and the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) have expresssed pleasure at hosting both the Regional Risk Reduction Initiative (R3I) Technical Meetings 26-29th January between key representatives of the Dutch, UK Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs ) as well as a Pre Workshop Regional Cooperation Meeting 25th January with the International Oceanographic Commission/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) IGC CARIBE Chair, France and Anguilla.
Anguilla will take this opportunity to launch the ‘Aerial Mapping and Early Warning System Activities’ on 26th January, the first day of the Regional Risk Reduction Initiative (R3I) meeting. The overseas delegates from the R3I member countries of the Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos, Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius, Aruba, St Maarten will be in attendance as well as Anguilla Red Cross and other key risk reduction stakeholders in Anguilla.
The R3I seeks to address the risk and exposure of these small islands by promoting intra-regional learning and sharing of tools, knowledge and best practices and providing a network of regional infrastructure, programmes, policies and protocols to strengthen their capacity to predict and prepare for natural hazards, thus improve resilience and reduce risk and subsequent loss.
Anguilla is expected to specifically benefit through development of mapping data and completion of the national warning system on the island.
R3I is funded by the European Commission to the tune of €4.932m covering a period of 3 years (2009-2011).
The R3I project is a new model being tested toward the management of donor funded initiatives at the Country level.
