Storm water ponds could be dug to prevent future flooding disasters for householders in South Tyneside, reports the Shields Gazette. This is part of a host of measures pledged by South Tyneside Councillor, Iain Malcolm, to prevent the summer floods, which have cost the borough £2m, from repeating.
Mr. Malcolm said: “This summer’s storms were extreme and unprecedented. It was heartening to see the way the council, South Tyneside Homes, the emergency services and local communities all pulled together in such difficult circumstances.
“These were extreme conditions, and we are very aware of the impact they continue to have on hundreds of local people. It is clear that we need to look at both short and long term measures to give residents and businesses increased protection in the future.”
