Sahel: Looming disaster that's hard to see - Australian Red Cross

Lacking the compelling images of floods, earthquakes and tsunamis, the worsening food crisis in the Sahel region of western Africa is struggling to attract the attention it deserves, writes Donna McSkimming for the Sydney Morning Herald, and a call for media to report on the risks of 'seemingly unremarkable phenomena - such as erratic rainfall and insect pests...'

Due to a combination of poor rainfall and insect infestations in the Sahel region, cereal production is down by 20 per cent in Mali, 30 per cent in Senegal and as much as 50 per cent in Chad, according to the report.
