Rare material shortages could put gadgets at risk

Over reliance on rare materials may set back modern technology's innovation, according to a new report quoted by BBC. One of the unpredictable risks is natural disasters. For example, Thailand's 2011 flooding disrupted global supply chains as the country is a hub for hardware manufacture. The flood induced shortages of storage devices extended well into 2012.
