Philippines: Linkages for disaster management

Source(s): Business World

To help promote disaster management among businesses, Dr. Quero, assistant professor at the Management and Organization Department, Ramon V. Del Rosario College of Business, De La Salle University recently did an action research that identified areas for cross-institutional linkages in disaster management that need to be enhanced. As she reports on the pages of the BusinessWorld online, the research focused on inter-governmental, inter-sectoral, and inter-organizational linkages. She interviewed the heads or decision-makers from 15 institutions who represent government agencies, private sector associations/non-governmental associations, media, academia, and foreign assistance organizations.

Results pointed out four areas or themes for cross-institutional linkages that support businesses in disaster management: disaster awareness and preparedness training; disaster risk financing (insurance); disaster relief and recovery; and management policy/attitudinal change on disasters. "Opportunities abound for strengthening cross-institutional linkages among the different sectors that would support private businesses in disaster preparedness and resilience," she said.
