Peru's President Ollanta Humala launched the program "Machines for Development" aimed at executing disaster prevention and mitigation actions across all regions of the country facing risk posed by potential natural calamities.

"The program will allow the government developing a better coordination with municipalities for any eventuality, thus supporting the House, Construction and Sanitation Ministry (MVCS) on disaster management machinery," President Humala noted.

Accompanying the head of State was the MVCS' head, Rene Cornejo, both presented the newly acquired crawler-mounted excavators, front loaders and tractors which will be deployed for carrying out operations for disaster risk reduction throughoug the national territory.

"They have been organized by teams and regions, we plan to decentralize the machinery hoping we never have to use them in the event of natural disasters, but more in prevention activities," said the Peruvian leader while delivering his remarks on Tuesday.

The Executive will begin its support operations of strengthening river banks by building levees to protect against a flood in the regions of Lima, Ica, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Arequipa, Cusco and Puno.
