Strengthening Britain – Nepal Friendship Helping hands in local humanitarian intervention

The central focus of this project was to improve the local emergency response of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Fire Brigade. In particular, donated fire fighting equipment and training increased the efficiency and effectiveness of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Fire Brigade’s fire fighters. The project helped fire fighters to acquire preparatory skills to fight disasters and to adapt to new and emerging risks in the city.

This initiative was unique as it was the first to involve cooperation between serving fire fighters from Tyne and Wear and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services, with researchers from Northumbria University and with fire fighting colleagues from a developing nation in order to share skills, ideas and fire fighting tactics and techniques in a forum characterised by openness and the spirit of sharing. This initiative also benefited the UK fire fighters and researchers as Kathmandu fire fighters shared their knowledge and techniques they use in a situation where technologically advanced equipment and vehicles are absent.

"These vehicles and the equipment will help fight fire more effectively. The assistance will boost our morale while doing risky jobs," said Lila Raj Gachha Magar, Chief of Kathmandu Fire Brigade.

"According to JFB chief Magar, an arrival of the new fire truck and necessary equipment have boosted their confidence to communicate within society. During their study, a group of six firemen and two experts from Northumbria University, UK went to each neighbourhood along with a fire truck to demonstrate how they work," reported Republica.
